"Volunteering Changed My Life"Rob_Osbourne.jpg

"I can’t pinpoint exactly when I decided to volunteer, but it came as I started to settle into recovery and reflect on the support I’d received - especially from the incredible staff at Navigo and Meridian Lodge. Even after discharge, they remembered me by name and treated me with kindness, which meant the world to someone with low confidence and anxiety.

"Another service first suggested volunteering, and without hesitation, I said I’d love to do it - with Navigo. I started in late 2024, going through induction, training, and quickly becoming involved in interview panels and support groups. Despite having no qualifications, I was asked to help decide who should get roles, and my voice was truly valued. I remember walking out of those sessions feeling appreciated—more than I ever did in any job I’ve had.

"I also helped create a new support group called FABA (For Addicts, By Addicts), which has been running successfully for months now. It’s not just helped others, it’s helped me too. Volunteering taught me new skills, gave me a sense of purpose, and boosted my confidence.

"In March 2025, I was encouraged by others to apply for a paid role as a Rehabilitation Support Worker. I couldn’t believe people saw that potential in me. I applied, interviewed - and got the job! I’m still waiting for all the checks to go through, but I’m proud to keep volunteering in the meantime.

"Navigo gave me purpose when I thought I had none. Every person I met was supportive and uplifting. They are all so understanding, encouraging and just an absolute pleasure to be around. I was constantly being treated with love and respect, I was appreciated and valued. They have given me belief in myself again, given me a reason to get up on a morning and go out and make a difference to not only my life, but to others.

"Volunteering gave me belief in myself, and that bright orange lanyard? I wear it with pride. It’s not just a badge - it’s a symbol of how far I’ve come.

"A few years ago, I didn’t even know what Navigo was. Now, they’ve changed my life. And honestly, they may have saved it."
