Supporting our staff to raise concerns

Speaking up is about anything which gets in the way of providing good care. There are various channels for our staff to speak up, including contacting our Freedom to Speak Up Guardians.

When things go wrong, we need to make sure that lessons are learnt, and things are improved. If we think something might go wrong, it’s important that we all feel able to speak up to stop potential harm. Even when things are good, but could be even better, we should feel able to say something and be confident that our suggestion will be used as an opportunity for improvement.

You can speak up about anything that gets in the way of patient care, or that affects your working life. That could be something which doesn’t feel right, for example:

  • a way of working or a process which isn’t being followed

  • the behaviours of others which you feel is having an impact on the well-being of you, the people you work with, or service users

  • patient safety concerns

We want you to feel safe to speak up. Your speaking up to us is a gift because it helps us identify opportunities for improvement that we might not otherwise know about.

We will not tolerate anyone being prevented or deterred from speaking up or being mistreated because they have spoken up.

When you speak up, we will:

  • thank you for speaking up

  • help you identify the options for resolution

  • signpost you to health and wellbeing support

  • confirm what information you have provided consent to share

  • support you with any further next steps and keep in touch with you

The outcomes will be shared with you wherever possible, along with any learning and improvement identified.

If a resolution has not been achieved, or you are not satisfied with the outcome, you can escalate the matter to the senior lead for FTSU, or the non-executive lead for FTSU. Alternatively, if you think there are good reasons not to use internal routes, speak up to an external body such as the Care Quality Commission or NHS England.

There are several Freedom to Speak Up Guardians. All have undergone training from The National Guardians Office.

You can get in touch by emailing the main Freedom to Speak Up inbox at navigo.ftsu@nhs.net.
